The Luminor was an update to the older Radiomir, named after the safer, tritium-based luminous material Panerai patented in 1949. The key lever-lock crown guard was invented in the late 1940s to keep the watch perfectly waterproof for Italian Navy divers. After decades as a military tool, the Luminor was first sold to the public in the 1990s and quickly became a luxury icon.
